Sledgehammer Games had plans for creating a spin off of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series until it was pulled off to work on the Modern Warfare 3 project. It was announced recently that those plans might still be carried out. This spin-off version is said to be an extension of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare franchise.

Many had speculated that the Call of Duty spin-off to be created by Sledgehammer would be some type of third person shooter game. The development was halted when both Activision and Sledgehammer were called upon to participate in the creation of the highly anticipated Modern Warfare 3. Activision officials claim that Sledgehammer is currently completely tied up with the Modern Warfare 3 project and that there is no specific date set in place for the release of the spin-off release.
There are many who are looking forward to the release of a game that will serve as an extension of the COD series. This extension would fall into the adventure/action genre and is something that could be a large success for the franchise or could not be. Whether or not it will be created and whether or not it will pay off remains to be seen.
One question that still exists is whether or not Sledgehammer will even get the opportunity next year to move forward with their plans for a spin-off third person shooter. Treyarch will get the chance to make a new COD game next year, and chances are pretty good that making a spin-off might not be part of the plan. There are still a lot of unknowns when it comes to whether or not this type of project will go forward.
There is no question that a sci-fi related twist to Call of Duty might be the answer when it comes to the question about the type of game that gets released next. There are, however, the lingering questions of if and when the spin-off will be created that still need to be answered. It might not even happen because developers are too busy with Modern Warfare 3. We’ll just have to wait and see.
